Miracle Fruit Plant
Miracle Fruit Plant
Miracle fruit plant, also known as Synsepalum dulcificum, is a tropical plant native to West Africa. Its most notable characteristic is its berries, which contain a glycoprotein called miraculin. When the pulp from the berry coats the taste buds, it temporarily alters the perception of taste, making sour or acidic foods taste sweet.
The plant itself is a small shrub that produces these red berries. It requires warm, humid conditions to thrive and typically grows best in USDA hardiness zones 10-11. While the plant can be grown indoors in containers, it needs specific conditions such as acidic soil, plenty of sunlight, and consistent moisture.
People often enjoy miracle fruit for its unique ability to transform flavours, making sour foods like lemons and vinegar taste remarkably sweet for about 30 minutes to an hour after consuming the berry or its extract. This intriguing quality has led to its use in "flavor-tripping" parties and in some cases as a natural sugar substitute.
